Manchester has a legendary reputation for first class football in the form of its world famous football team, Manchester United. However, it wasn always that way, Manchester first took off as a thriving city with the arrival of the industrial revolution in the 18th century. The area was transformed by a wealth of cotton producing mills that subsequently paid for many of the grand Victorian buildings such as the town hall that can still be seen around the city today. The arrival of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 gave the city Britains third largest port and encouraged further trade.
In later years Manchester saw some of the worse effects of industrial decline and further down the line suffered from severe bombing during the Second World War. Sadly as the city was enjoying newfound fame as the vibrant Madchester with bands such as Oasis and Simply Red putting the it back in the spotlight, it suffered the devastation of the 1996 IRA bombing.
Not a city to be put down for long Manchester has once more transformed itself thanks to sufficient investment to bring the city back to its former glory in time for the highly successful hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Not only has it gained a brand new stadium, but also plenty of modern architecture, fantastic shopping facilities, some great hotels and a bustling nightlife including a thriving student and gay scene, making Manchester an exciting city to discover.
